Unitree upgrades its firefighting kit: robot dogs that step into smoke, poison and collapse

On 31 August, Unitree released an upgraded firefighting and emergency solution with a blunt slogan: robots are made for people, built to serve, to charge into fire and danger.

From reconnaissance to water cannon

Unitree is not new to the field. In April it unveiled a firefighting reconnaissance dog with Bawei Tong, fusing embodied and spatial intelligence. At the Yangtze Delta emergency expo in May it showed a four-legged solution: a reconnaissance version that searches rubble and identifies gas in complex terrain, and a water-cannon version that fights fire directly. At a Fujian training base, firefighters piloted a Unitree dog on autonomous patrol to test image capture and relay in random obstacles.

The B2 dog carries an IP68 rating, runs at 5 metres per second, climbs 45-degree slopes and squeezes through gaps just 5 centimetres wider than itself. The firefighting version mounts a cannon rated for 6 to 7 bar. Unitree is also exploring a laser plus embodied-intelligence package with Raycus Laser and signed a strategic deal with CRRC.

A procurement curve, not a line

Local governments are moving. On 26 August an Xuancheng emergency bureau outlined plans to buy firefighting robots; Wuhan’s mobile fire detachment already runs Go2 dogs and G1 units. Xuancheng, Wuhan, Tianjin and Chongqing are all procuring Unitree machines.

The piece argues Unitree is shifting from “can dance” to “can save”: a dog that climbs rubble, carries a cannon and relays data in a toxic scene is industrial-grade on three axes at once, protection, payload and motion control. Once a product enters government procurement catalogues, its growth stops being linear and starts compounding, much as DJI’s did in drones.
