China’s steel sector has been pushing into high-end precision materials this year, and a cluster of new products is quietly underwriting electronics, new energy and advanced equipment. The headline act is Cicada Wing Steel, also called 5G steel, at its thinnest just 0.07 millimetres, about the width of a hair and slimmer than a sheet of A4 paper, yet with high strength and ductility.
Do not mistake it for a party trick. The super-thin sheet is in stable mass production and already inside phone shrapnel, integrated-circuit substrates, 5G base-station filters and signal emitters, EV battery connectors and premium food tin packaging that balances safety with light weight.

The motor inside the machine
High-end electrical steel, or silicon steel, keeps breaking performance limits. Non-oriented grades at 0.1 millimetre sit in the global first tier for iron loss and power the drive motors of new-energy vehicles and the joint motors of humanoids. The material reaches the world’s top ten automakers, and one in three Chinese new-energy vehicles carries a motor core made from it. Humanoid-specific grades with high permeability and low loss fit the high torque density and low heat the joints demand.
From the once-famous hand-tear steel to today’s 0.07 millimetre Cicada Wing that folds into a paper plane, the thinning curve reflects a mature capability in high-end steel research and manufacturing, and a self-built support system from ocean to sky.
Shipyards eat the supply
At north-east China’s largest shipbuilding base, workers weld tens-of-tonne plates while several high-end vessels advance together. The first half of 2026 brought new ship orders of 121.06 million deadweight tonnes, up 173.1 per cent year on year and an 82.3 per cent global share. Angang’s high-end ship plate, with high-strength crack arrest and low-temperature corrosion resistance, is in short supply, with some sought-after grades booked into 2029 and three lines at full load producing about 2 million tonnes a year.
Domestic breakthroughs keep landing. Invar steel for LNG carrier containment systems cleared key hurdles in minus 163 Celsius toughness and ultra-thin precision rolling, breaking an overseas monopoly of decades. In aerospace, TISCO launched its JiJing steel brand; the aviation-mould grade has one-tenth the thermal expansion of conventional steel and is used in C919 composite forming moulds.
Industry pulling industry
First-half data shows the high-end manufacturing expansion is the engine. Above-scale industrial value added rose 5.4 per cent, manufacturing 5.6 per cent and high-tech manufacturing 13.3 per cent. Industrial robot output grew 28 per cent and new-energy vehicle output 6 per cent. This year China has logged seven global-first core steel products and led 15 internationally released steel standards, from fundamentals to low-carbon and complex-corrosion protection.
Policy is steering the same way: a stabilisation plan calls for annual value-added growth near 4 per cent through high-end special steel and quality upgrades, while tighter capacity-swap rules push the sector toward higher-end, smarter, greener output. Materials are the quiet foundation under the electric-vehicle and humanoid story, and on this front the groundwork is broadening.
