China’s car exports are on track to cross 10 million units for the full year, and the make-up of that volume has shifted in a way western carmakers cannot ignore.
Exports clear 8.2 million in three quarters
The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported this week that outbound shipments reached 8.205 million units in the first nine months of 2026, up 65.8 per cent year on year. On the current pace, total exports are expected to top 10 million for the year. Several domestic brands have held double-digit export growth through the period, and the reach of Chinese cars keeps widening across Europe, South America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
New-energy vehicles are now the engine
New-energy vehicles accounted for 4.006 million of those exports, more than double the same period a year earlier. From June onward, NEVs have made up more than half of all car exports for four consecutive months. The association’s deputy secretary general Liu Yan says China’s global competitiveness has moved from a price advantage to a system advantage built around electrification and intelligence. That shift, she argues, injects fresh momentum into the global green transition and earns Chinese carmakers a durable new edge.
The read for Europe is direct. Chinese brands are no longer arriving as low-cost alternatives alone. They are landing with electric platforms and software-defined features that reset the competitive baseline on the continent, just as Brussels weighs how far trade tools can blunt the inflow.
