Gotion Built a 200,000-Tonne Cathode Line in Nine Months

Gotion High-Tech’s cathode materials subsidiary Runhui brought a 200,000-tonne-per-year plant to full production at the Lujiang high-tech zone in Anhui on 29 October, moving the project into volume operation nine months after construction began.

The line uses Gotion’s fourth-generation lithium iron phosphate process and was built as a digitalised smart factory. It is designed to be upwardly compatible with the next generation of product, positioning it to supply materials for the company’s fifth-generation cells when those enter volume delivery.

Why cathode capacity is the constraint

Cathode material is the core input for both power and storage cells. It determines electrochemical performance, product consistency and cost across the full life of the battery, which is why cell makers with large volume ambitions have been moving upstream into it.

The project tightens the link between Gotion’s material output and its cell manufacturing, improving self-supply of a key input and reducing exposure to merchant material prices. For a company that supplies both vehicle and grid storage customers, that control matters more than headline cell capacity.

The wider pattern is the same across the leading Chinese cell makers. As electric vehicle and storage demand expand, they are extending backwards into materials to hold supply and contain cost, rather than relying on third-party purchase agreements.

Gotion’s Lujiang plant sits inside that logic. It is a materials project reported as a supply chain project, and the operating question for competitors is how much of their own cathode requirement they can cover without buying at market prices.
