Qualcomm’s 2nm Dual Flagships Arrive, Rebuilt for the Agentic AI Era, Phones Now Run 30-Billion-Parameter Models

At the Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui on 22 September, Qualcomm launched two flagships on a 2 nm process, the sixth-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Supreme and the sixth-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite, the first time the Snapdragon line has used 2 nm and the first time two Elite platforms arrived together.

The agentic device was the centrepiece. Qualcomm showed some of the earliest agentic devices, Honor’s Robot Phone, Alibaba’s native agent laptop Qwen Book and Nubia’s NaviX Ultra with the Doubao assistant, all on Snapdragon. President and chief executive Cristiano Amon said we are at the opening of the agentic era and Snapdragon is built for it. The HBC high-bandwidth compute engine designed for data-centre AI chips will also reach phones to lift efficiency.

The 8 Elite Supreme rebuilds the whole system, CPU, GPU, NPU, ISP and fabric, to keep more intelligence close to the processor. The Oryon CPU is 8 cores, 2 super cores and 6 performance cores, reaching 5 GHz, the first mobile CPU past that mark. A new FlexCache dynamically shares an L2 pool so agents migrating threads across cores stay responsive.

The NPU Runs 30-Billion-Parameter Models

The Hexagon NPU is the headline for on-device agents. A new Element Accelerator for Transformer workloads, with shared memory up 50 per cent, supports 32k token context and lifts pre-fill up to 80 per cent on some models. The platform runs 30-billion-parameter MoE models on device. With StepFun, Jiangbolong and others, Qualcomm deployed StepFun’s StepEdgeOmni 30-billion-parameter MoE fully on edge, cutting memory need by more than 50 per cent without losing precision.

The Adreno GPU adds AI Matrix Cores for the first time, keeping neural work inside the graphics pipeline, with Adreno Neural Fusion for AI super-resolution and frame generation. The Spectra ISP becomes a multimodal engine, assigning 16-bit AI data per pixel, 256 times finer than before, and enabling 8K 60 fps video. The sensor hub gains an 85 per cent performance lift to keep always-on perception at low power.

Xiaomi senior vice president Zeng Xuezhong said on stage that Xiaomi will ship the first phones on the dual flagships. Xiaomi HyperOS 4 and the Elite platform are co-optimised at the scheduling, memory and runtime level, cutting single-frame power 38 per cent in a heavy open-world game. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max pushes peak performance with stronger cooling.

The broader signal is edge. Qualcomm will carry HBC into laptops, smart glasses and cars, pushing agentic AI off the cloud and onto the device.
