Ex-OpenAI researcher’s Light Origins closes several-hundred-million-yuan Pre-A for embodied foundation models

Gasgoo Embodied Intelligence has learned that Light Origins has closed a several-hundred-million-yuan Pre-A round. The round was led by Guoke Investment, with CMG Venture Capital and Xianghe Capital joining, and the funds will go to large-scale embodied-model training, multimodal data infrastructure, full-stack hardware-software platform research, and expansion of a high-density talent team.

Light Origins was founded at the end of 2024. Founder and CEO Jiang Xu was an algorithm expert at OpenAI, lived through the InstructGPT, ChatGPT and GPT-4 cycles, and worked on training, inference optimisation and reinforcement learning from human feedback.

Its core strategy is to build an embodied foundation model and push large-model capability from the digital space into the physical world. To that end it proposes a three-stage paradigm of scaled pre-training, scaled alignment and scaled deployment. Scaled pre-training builds base ability through large data. Scaled alignment lifts capability through reinforcement learning. Scaled deployment pushes the base model into the real world and keeps generating high-quality real-world data, forming a flywheel that drives the base model forward.

The team now exceeds 100 people, with research and development above 90 per cent. The algorithm team draws from QS Top 20 PhD programmes and engineers from world-class technology firms. The hardware team carries experience from Huawei and DJI.
