China’s August top ten was an all-electric clean sweep for the first time

The ten best-selling passenger cars in China in August were all electric. Not just all new energy, but all battery-electric, with combustion and plug-in hybrid models shut out entirely.

It is the second time this year that combustion cars have been wiped out of the top ten, and the first time this year that battery-electric models have taken every place.

Geely Xingyuan led with 39,651 retail sales. Leapmotor A10 followed on 30,652, with the Tesla Model Y third on 29,260. The rest of the list ran BYD Yuan UP, Tesla Model 3, Changan Nevo Q05, Li Auto i6, BYD Dolphin, Xiaomi SU7 and Wuling Bingo Pro.

China Passenger Car Association data shows retail sales of new energy passenger cars reached 1.005 million units in August, down 10.1 per cent year on year but far better than the 23.6 per cent decline across the overall passenger car market. New energy retail penetration rose to 65.2 per cent, a record. Conventional combustion passenger cars sold about 540,000 units, down 40 per cent.

The clean sweep therefore does not mean new energy is still growing quickly. It means combustion is falling faster.

Combustion went from seven seats to none in eight months

In January combustion models still held seven of the top ten places. By March that was down to five. In April only the Geely Binyue remained. In May combustion fell out of the top ten for the first time, though plug-in hybrids still featured. By August the ten places were entirely battery-electric.

In the second half of the year combustion briefly returned in shrinking numbers. Two models in June, one in July, none in August. Within eight months the top of China’s sales chart moved from replacing combustion with new energy to competing among electric models themselves.

Single-month rankings are shaped by launches, incentives and delivery timing. But when the same result repeats across months, the structural meaning becomes harder to ignore. August’s top ten also covered a wider spread of price bands and brands, drawing on Geely, Leapmotor, Tesla, BYD, Changan, Li Auto, Xiaomi and Wuling. New energy is no longer propped up by a few cheap small cars. It has become a fuller product matrix, while long-standing leaders such as the Volkswagen Lavida, Nissan Sylphy and Toyota Corolla lose their stable places.

New energy fell too, just less

August retail across the whole passenger car market was 1.541 million units, down 23.6 per cent year on year and up 5.5 per cent month on month. Cumulative retail from January to August was 11.716 million units, down 20.8 per cent. New energy retail fell 10.1 per cent year on year, so the segment is not growing fast either. Combustion fell 40 per cent, with pure combustion down 45 per cent and ordinary hybrids up 10 per cent.

That gap of nearly 30 percentage points is what lifted new energy share to a record 65.2 per cent, up 9.9 percentage points on a year earlier. Roughly 65 of every 100 passenger cars sold in China that month were new energy. The pattern matches July, when new energy fell 3.9 per cent and combustion fell more than 40 per cent. If the trend holds, penetration can keep rising even without overall market growth, simply because the combustion market is shrinking faster.

The all-electric era at the top

An all-electric top ten moves the fight at the head of the market from electric versus combustion to electric versus electric. One month cannot settle the longer picture. The coming peak season will see combustion, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric models all pushed hard, and that is the real test. If battery-electric models still hold most of the top ten through the peak season, August will look less like an off-season accident and more like the moment the sales leaders entered the electric era.
