1. The Ranking

2. Three Signals
Signal 1
- Fact: Chinese brands held 16.5% of UK registrations in June 2026, but 11.6% without MG.
- Read: MG (wholly SAIC-owned) still does the heavy lifting. Strip it out and the China footprint is half the headline.
Signal 2
- Fact: MG registered 10,395 units (rank 5) while the Chery group (Chery, Jaecoo, Omoda) reached 13,590 combined.
- Read: Chery’s sub-brand stacking is quietly building a second pillar beside MG.
Signal 3
- Fact: BYD reached 6,242 units (rank 16), up 36.2% year on year.
- Read: BYD is climbing the premium ladder where margins live, not just chasing volume.
3. The Take
Britain is the market where the China story needs a footnote, and the footnote matters. Chinese brands took 16.5% of new registrations in June 2026. Take MG out and the number falls to 11.6%. MG (wholly SAIC-owned) is still doing the heavy lifting, and anyone quoting the headline without the caveat is misreading the market.
But do not mistake MG-led for MG-only. The Chery group (Chery plus Jaecoo plus Omoda) reached 13,590 units combined, a figure that would put it second only to Volkswagen if the brands were stacked. That is a second pillar being built in plain sight, using sub-brands the buyer thinks are separate.
BYD climbed to 6,242 units (rank 16), up 36.2% year on year, and it is doing it in the pricier EV tiers where the margin lives. The UK consumer is not buying Chinese on price alone anymore. They are buying on design, software and speed to market.
The risk for European makers is complacency dressed as patriotism. A 16.5% share that is really 11.6% without one brand looks containable. An 11.6% share that is rising across four or five names looks like a siege. Watch the ex-MG line. That is the one that tells you if Britain is next.
