RobotBelt Monthly Auto Tracker — Australia — June 2026

1. The Ranking

Top 20
Top 20 brands by monthly sales, China-badged brands highlighted in teal. (RobotBelt Monthly Auto Tracker — Australia, 2026-06)

2. Three Signals

Signal 1

  • Fact: BYD sold 18,881 units in June 2026, just 1.2% behind Toyota’s 19,124.
  • Read: For the first time a Chinese brand is effectively level with the long-time market leader.

Signal 2

  • Fact: China-badged brands reached 33.3% of the market (29.5% excluding MG).
  • Read: One in three new cars now wears a Chinese badge. This is a structural shift, not a blip.

Signal 3

  • Fact: Chery (with Omoda and Jaecoo) hit 7,046 units at rank 8, with Geely at 3,507.
  • Read: The challenger bench is deep. This is a portfolio advance, not a single-brand story.

3. The Take

Australia just saw the line Toyota owned for two decades get erased. BYD sold 18,881 units in June 2026, a whisker (1.2%) behind Toyota’s 19,124. Call it a tie if you like. The headline is not a single brand’s spike. It is the whole China block reaching 33.3% of the market (29.5% without MG). One in three new cars now wears a Chinese badge.

This is not a discount-bin story. BYD is taking the high ground with the Sealion and the Shark, not just the cheap hatch. Chery (with Omoda and Jaecoo) landed 7,046 units at rank eight. Geely tripled to 3,507. The challenger bench is deep enough that a single recall or a single tariff could not dent the curve.

The incumbents are not asleep. Toyota and Ford still move metal by the truckload. But the mix is shifting under them. Every month the Chinese share holds above thirty per cent, the temporary label gets harder to defend. Australia was always the easiest Western market for China to take (open, price-sensitive, EV-hungry). The number says the takeover is already underway.

The question for the majors is simple. Do they cut price and bleed, or do they cede the segment and hope the next one stays theirs.
