2. Three Signals

Signal 1

  • Fact: BYD led Singapore with 1,021 units in June 2026, a 21.5% year-on-year gain and 21.3% of the market.
  • Read: BYD is not just winning. It is lapping the field, with Tesla the only non-Chinese name in the top two.

Signal 2

  • Fact: Chinese brands held 47.9% of Singapore’s new-car market in June 2026 (43.2% excluding MG).
  • Read: In a market this small and EV-hungry, China has effectively become the default choice, not the cheap alternative.

Signal 3

  • Fact: Chery, Maxus, Deepal, Zeekr and Xpeng all posted triple-digit or near-triple-digit gains, with newcomer AvatR entering the top 20.
  • Read: The second wave is arriving as fast as the first. The ranking is being rebuilt from rank six down.

3. The Take

Singapore is the cleanest proof of the China thesis. A market of 4,791 cars a month, boxed in by COE quotas and steep taxes, should be the last place a foreign bloc takes half the board. Instead Chinese brands held 47.9% in June 2026 (43.2% without MG). BYD alone took 21.3%, more than Toyota and Mercedes combined.

The incumbents are not losing on price. They are losing on relevance. Tesla is the only non-Chinese name in the top two, and it is a battery car too. Toyota, BMW and Mercedes are sliding double digits while Chery, Maxus, Deepal and Zeekr post gains you have to read twice.

The danger for the legacy brands is that Singapore is a preview, not an outlier. The same buyers who once defaulted to a German badge now default to a Chinese EV, because the software, the range and the showroom are better. When the small, picky market flips this fast, the big ones should worry.

The question is not whether China wins Singapore. It already has. The question is how long the COE system keeps the total small enough to hide the score.
