• Read: The national brands own the volume. Everyone else is fighting for the remaining two-fifths of the market.

Signal 2

• Fact: Chinese brands held 8.9% of Malaysia’s market in June 2026, led by Omoda Jaecoo (1,267) and the Chery group.
• Read: The China push is real but still early here. Proton’s Geely-based EVs are the wildcard the raw China number does not show.

• Fact: BYD (1,076), GWM (738) and Zeekr (459) all sit inside the top 20, with Jetour and Leapmotor breaking in.
• Read: The challenger bench is stacking up exactly as it did in Thailand two years ago.

3. The Take

Malaysia is the one market where the China story has to wait its turn. Perodua and Proton took 58.9% of June 2026 between them, a wall no foreign brand has ever climbed. Chinese names reached just 8.9% of the market, a fraction of what they hold in Thailand or Singapore.

But do not read that as a failure. The footprint is being laid exactly where it was in Thailand in 2023. Omoda Jaecoo at 1,267 units, Chery, BYD, GWM and Zeekr all inside the top 20, Jetour and Leapmotor breaking through. The model ladder is being built brand by brand.

The twist is Proton. Its e.MAS EVs are Geely-based, and they are the best-selling electric cars in the country. So China’s technology is taking share in Malaysia even when the badge says national. The raw China number undersells the real penetration.

The question for the challengers is simple. Can they break the national-brand loyalty before the next Proton refresh closes the gap. The early signs say the climb has already started.
