3. The Take
Brazil just posted its strongest June in 13 years, and the China bloc was the story inside the story. BYD held 4th for a second month with 21,254 units, ahead of Toyota and Hyundai. Chinese brands reached 19.6% of the market, with the gains no longer BYD-alone. Chery, GWM, Geely and Jaecoo all set records.
The timing is not accidental. Brazil’s EV import tariff steps up to its full 35% rate in July 2026, and June shows the classic front-loading pulse. Brands pulled volume forward to beat the wall. Read the surge with that in mind. Some of it is real demand, some is a tariff window.
The structural point stands regardless. A Chinese brand is now a permanent fixture in Brazil’s top tier, the EV is selling on its own merits, and the challenger bench (Geely, Jaecoo, GWM) is deepening every month. The legacy majors cannot blame one brand anymore.
The question for the incumbents is whether a 19.6% China share is the ceiling or the floor. With the tariff wall now up, the next months tell you which.
