Unitree upgrades its firefighting robot dog, pitching it as life-saving gear rather than a demo

On 31 August, Unitree released an upgraded firefighting emergency solution, with the slogan robots are made for people, on a mission to serve the public, through fire and water, duty bound.

This is not Unitree’s first move into firefighting. In April it unveiled a firefighting reconnaissance robot dog built with Bawei Tong, fusing embodied intelligence with spatial intelligence. At the Yangtze River Delta emergency expo in May, Unitree showed a quadruped firefighting solution: a reconnaissance version searches, films and identifies gases in rubble and on rough terrain, while a water-cannon version joins the firefight directly. At a training base in Shaxian, Fujian, firefighters used a controller to plot autonomous patrol routes for the Unitree quadruped and tested its imaging and data relay under random obstacles.

The Unitree B2 firefighting dog carries IP68 protection, runs at 5 metres per second, climbs 45-degree slopes and squeezes through gaps only 5 centimetres wider than its body. The firefighting version mounts a water cannon rated for 6 to 7 bar. Unitree is also working with Raycus Laser on a laser-plus-embodied-intelligence package and has signed a strategic deal with CRRC to build intelligent solutions for firefighting and other fields.

Local governments are moving. On 26 August, a Unitree team visited the Xuancheng emergency bureau, which signalled plans to procure firefighting robots. Wuhan’s mobile firefighting detachment has already taken delivery of Go2 robot dogs and G1 robots.

From can move to can save

Unitree has long been read through its Spring Festival dance routines, backflips and parkour. But in 2026 it is doing something more worth watching than spectacle: making robots actually work. Firefighting is the harshest test of work, with smoke, toxins, heat and collapse. A dog that carries a water cannon into a fire, climbs rubble and relays data matches the difficulty of a humanoid screwing bolts on a line.

The B2 climbs 45-degree slopes and threads 5-centimetre gaps, capabilities built for the firefighter’s can’t get in, can’t see problem, not for show. When a dog replaces a firefighter in a toxic scene to find survivors and locate the seat of the fire, it saves lives, not just property.

From reconnaissance to firefighting, from rubble search to daily inspection, Unitree is building a full recon-decide-act firefighting chain. Once it works, Unitree’s identity shifts from robot company to industry solution provider. The valuation logic moves from sell hardware to sell service plus capability, which are not in the same league.

Xuancheng, Wuhan, Tianjin and Chongqing are among the local governments buying Unitree firefighting robots. The path from local pilot to national rollout mirrors DJI’s expansion in drones. When a product enters government procurement catalogues, the growth curve stops being linear and goes exponential.

Unitree is proving it is not just a robot that dances but a robot that saves lives. That, not the backflips, is the real moat.
