AgiBot unveils the world’s first wheel-legged guide robot for 17 million visually impaired people in China

On the morning of 4 September, at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, Yuanshan Zhixing, under the AgiBot Research Institute, launched Xiaoyuan, a smart agile guide dog. It is the world’s first wheel-legged guide robot.

It is not a robot that dances on a stage or flips at a launch. It is built to solve independent travel for visually impaired people.

One machine, two ways to walk

A number makes the launch concrete: more than 17 million visually impaired people in China, against only about 400 guide dogs nationwide. Seventeen million to 400 is a lopsided equation. A live guide dog takes two years to train, supply is severely short, and most visually impaired people never get one.

Xiaoyuan’s core design is a wheel-leg fusion structure. On flat ground it moves on wheels, quiet and stable, not disturbing the user’s acoustic sense of the environment. At steps and stairs it switches to legged mode to climb. Ordinary white canes cannot, Xiaoyuan can.

It also detects overhead obstacles like low branches and scaffolding that many guide devices miss. Outdoor positioning error stays within 30 centimetres. Indoor obstacle avoidance success is 99 per cent, outdoor 96 per cent. It plans routes autonomously, senses obstacles in real time, slows and reroutes.

Behind the specs is a team that lived with visually impaired users for months, grinding perception, traction-force control and resistance feedback into the product.

A military group’s other path

The developer is the Hangzhou Yuanshan Research Institute of China North Industries Group, a central state-owned defence group. Founded in 2022, it draws on a national key lab to convert military-grade sensing, control and navigation into civilian use. From strengthen the military to help the blind is an uncommon route. Xiaoyuan appeared at the 2026 World Robot Conference and by 20 August had partnered with several local federations of the disabled for pilots in subways and malls.

From project launch to mass production took two years. Slow for consumer electronics, but for a product needing repeated testing with users, two years to a full-chain breakthrough signals a mature technical base.

More important than specs is moving technology from the stage to the ground. Live guide dogs need two years and hundreds of thousands of yuan with low success. Once Xiaoyuan is mass-produced, marginal cost keeps falling and supply elasticity rises exponentially. From wait two years, never get one to order and receive one is an infrastructure problem, not a technology one.

Hangzhou’s May 2026 regulation on embodied-AI robots opened a first-try, first-use channel. Xihu district opened roads, business districts and parks for real testing. That turn the whole city into a test field approach gave Xiaoyuan rich experience in outdoor navigation, on-the-spot decisions and user interaction.

When a defence group turns a guide robot into a mass product, it proves technology can enter life another way. The 17 million need the traction rope in hand each day, not applause at a launch. Xiaoyuan is pulling that rope from the lab to the ground.
