Back in 2014, while studying in Sydney, I was fascinated by the “road zipper” trucks that shifted barriers to optimise tidal traffic during peak hours. It was a brilliant system that several cities in China adopted shortly after.
However, we are now seeing an even more elegant solution: robotic road barriers.
Instead of requiring a dedicated vehicle to shift lanes, these barriers move themselves independently to accommodate changing traffic flows. It is a brilliant example of how smart infrastructure can make our daily commute more seamless without the need for heavy manual labour or extra machinery.
What do you think? Is this the future of smart city design?
