Signal 1

- Read: BYD’s dip is a mix signal, not a collapse. The powertrain shift underneath it is the real story, and Chinese names build most of those EVs.
3. The Take
Chinese carmakers did not just hold their ground in Thailand in August. They stacked the board from rank four down and left Toyota the top step alone. The China block took 35.9% of the auto market (30.7% without MG), up from 31.0% in June, and the move is broad based rather than carried by one name.
Toyota, Honda and Isuzu still hold the podium on heartland loyalty and pickups, and anyone counting only the top three will miss the story. Look at ranks four through nine. Chery’s Omoda and Jaecoo combo led the Chinese charge at 4,945 units. MG followed at 3,273. GWM at 2,931. BYD at 2,591. Geely at 2,267. GAC at 1,492. That is six Chinese badges inside the top ten, and they sum to 17,499 units, more than Honda on its own.
The danger for the incumbents is the bench, not the headline. Five years ago a Chinese brand in Thailand meant one nameplate and a footnote. Today it means a stacked portfolio (BYD, MG, Geely, Chery, Changan, GAC, Deepal) each with a model ladder and a price curve the locals cannot match. The August powertrain split makes it worse for them. BEVs took 35.2% of the market and passed diesel for the first time, and the Chinese bloc builds most of those EVs.
Watch the EV mix, not just the total. When the Chinese share is this high and still rising, the question is no longer if they win Thailand. It is how fast the rest of Southeast Asia follows, and whether Bangkok’s new import-tax wall (mooted at up to 32% on imported EVs) slows the curve or just pushes the plants deeper into the country.
