BYD’s headcount has passed one million people, a scale no other carmaker has reached and one that reframes how the company’s cost structure should be read.
Speaking at the 33rd annual conference of the China Society of Automotive Engineers on 28 October, BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu said group employment had exceeded 1.02 million. About 960,000 of those jobs are in China and roughly 60,000 overseas. Research and engineering staff number 120,000, spanning battery cells, electric motors, power electronics and semiconductors.

The comparison that lands
Wang attributed the scale to vertical integration, the practice of keeping core components such as batteries, chips and motors inside the group rather than buying them from suppliers. The headcount is the accounting consequence of that choice.
Set it against the industry. Toyota employed 390,927 people as of 31 March 2026. Volkswagen Group, including its Chinese joint ventures, reported 662,942 at the end of 2025. Stellantis had 258,668, Ford 169,000 and General Motors 156,000 at the end of 2025. Tesla’s most recent annual report lists 134,785.
Toyota, GM, Ford and Tesla together employ roughly 851,000 people, which is fewer than BYD alone. The gap is not a rounding error and it is not a temporary artefact of a hiring push.
The trajectory is worth noting. BYD ended 2025 with about 869,600 employees, stood at 911,900 by the end of June 2026, and crossed 1.02 million in October. That is an addition of roughly 110,000 people in four months, during a year in which the company’s own deliveries were falling.
What sits inside the number
BYD’s total includes BYD Electronics, its controlled contract manufacturing arm, which employed 165,000 people at the end of 2025. It also includes businesses that sell outside the car: batteries to third parties, in-house semiconductors, electric motors, energy storage and rail transit.
That composition matters when the figure is compared with pure carmakers. A Toyota employee count covers vehicle assembly and the surrounding engineering organisation. A BYD employee count covers a vertically integrated industrial group that happens to have a car business at its centre.
The productivity gap underneath
BYD sold about 4.6 million vehicles in 2025. Against 869,600 employees at year end, that is roughly 5.3 vehicles per person. Tesla delivered 1,636,129 vehicles with about 12 per person. Volkswagen Group came in near 13.5. Toyota, including Daihatsu and Hino, sold 11.3 million vehicles at about 29 per person.
The spread is the direct arithmetic of make-versus-buy. When a carmaker produces its own cells, power electronics and chips, the labour for those operations sits on its own payroll instead of a supplier’s. Output per employee falls and control over cost, quality and delivery timing rises.
Whether that trade pays depends on utilisation. Vertical integration converts fixed cost into a weapon when volumes grow and into a weight when they stall.
The year the model is being tested
2026 is that test. In the first nine months BYD sold 3,131,576 vehicles, down 3.9 per cent year on year. Overseas sales reached 1,342,960 units, up 92.7 per cent and 43 per cent of the total. First-half revenue was RMB 344.8 billion with net profit of RMB 12.3 billion.
Flat-to-lower domestic volume with a fast-growing export book is exactly the mix that stresses a million-person organisation. Export volumes carry higher unit economics but also require overseas capacity, local hiring and logistics that a domestic plant does not. The 60,000 overseas employees, six per cent of the total, are the leading edge of that build-out.
The headcount figure will be read in two ways. As a symbol of industrial scale, it is unmatched. As a productivity metric, it is a warning that the company has taken on the labour content of its entire supply chain, and that every point of utilisation now matters more than it would for a carmaker that buys its components.
