After tearing down a Chinese humanoid, Japanese engineers conceded defeat

A Nikkei teardown of a low-cost Chinese humanoid has stirred debate in Japanese engineering circles, with veteran roboticists conceding that China’s mass-production logic, not raw component precision, now sets the tempo of the field.

The details that stung

The engineers were struck less by headline tech than by unglamorous choices. The screw threads felt unusually clean, a sign the design was optimised for assembly speed on a line, not just for strength. The 9,000 mAh battery, made by a Chinese cell maker rather than Panasonic or Samsung, balanced power density, size and safety at a price Japan could match in performance but not at volume. The ankle joint used a four-in-one module of motor, planetary reducer, encoder and driver with all wiring run through the joint axis, leaving a clean exterior, against the hand-soldered ‘nest of wires’ typical of older Japanese bipeds.

A different industrial logic

The robot stands 1.32 metres, weighs 35 kg, drives 23 joints and sells for about 85,000 yuan at a cost near 41,600 and a gross margin above 40 per cent. Every core part, from the Rockchip controller to the servo and the reducer, is China-made. Japan can still build a more precise machine, but its elite-lab route yields robots costing two or three million dollars with no real commercial path, refreshed every two or three years. China ships a working product and iterates every six months, leaning on a mature consumer supply chain and self-developed motion-control software.

The paradigm, not the parts

The piece argues Japan did not lose a technology contest. It lost the habit of building million-dollar showpieces while China built a trillion-yuan industry by making robots that are usable, affordable and shippable, then improving them through volume and feedback. In the first half of 2026 Chinese humanoid makers including Unitree, AgiBot, UBtech and XPeng shipped densely, with overseas orders booked into year end. The lesson is that a technology only stays alive if it sells, gets used and keeps evolving, and on that test the table may be turning.
