Gotion Grew Revenue 54 Per Cent and Handed Volkswagen the Keys to Three Plants

Gotion High-Tech reported third-quarter results on 28 October, and the headline growth rate is less instructive than the shape of the business behind it.

Revenue for the first nine months reached RMB 45.44 billion, up 53.98 per cent year on year. Non-recurring net profit, which strips out one-off gains, was RMB 252 million, up 195.54 per cent. The profit base is thin in absolute terms, but the direction is clear and the growth is coming from volume rather than price.

Share gains in a slower market

Chinese battery installations reached 576.3 gigawatt-hours in the first three quarters, up 16.7 per cent, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance. Gotion accounted for 34.89 gigawatt-hours, up 32.81 per cent, taking a 6.07 per cent share, a gain of 0.74 percentage points.

Globally the picture is stronger. SNE Research puts Gotion’s January to August shipments at 41.5 gigawatt-hours, up 47.1 per cent against a market that grew 19.7 per cent, ranking fifth worldwide. Growing at more than twice the market rate is what a credible second-tier supplier has to do to avoid being priced out of long-term contracts.

On the passenger car side, Gotion supplies the full Chery QQ3EV range with lithium iron phosphate packs, a model that has held monthly sales above 10,000 units for six consecutive months. It is also the largest cell supplier to Leapmotor, covering the A10, B10, C11 and C16, and holds first-supplier status on several of those models. Geely is the third anchor customer.

Heavy trucks as the second leg

Commercial vehicles have become a meaningful extension. Gotion ranked in the industry top five for heavy truck battery installations in the January to August period, with growth of 51.5 per cent.

The binding constraint in truck electrification is transport economics, which is a weight problem before it is a chemistry problem. On 20 October the company launched a new CTB rear-integrated heavy truck pack that cuts vehicle weight by about 400 kilograms against a conventional single-pack layout and covers 400 to 700 kilowatt-hours of capacity.

The Volkswagen structure is the real change

Gotion’s relationship with Volkswagen already covered equity, standard cell development and volume supply. In the first half of 2026 the company sold about RMB 2.536 billion of materials and cells to Volkswagen China and related parties, which is the commercial base under the next step.

In September the two disclosed a deeper plan: three joint ventures in Spain, Slovakia and Morocco, building 29.1 gigawatt-hours of cell capacity, 8.4 gigawatt-hours of cell capacity and 100,000 tonnes of lithium iron phosphate cathode material respectively. Gotion’s wholly owned subsidiary is also lined up to take on engineering work for the Valencia battery project.

The structure is more significant than the capacity numbers. Previous Chinese overseas plants were cell factories built to serve local assembly. This one connects cathode material, cell manufacturing and nearby customers into a single chain, which is what European policymakers have been asking for and what Chinese suppliers have been reluctant to give.

It also changes Gotion’s risk profile. A supplier shipping cells into Europe carries tariff and logistics exposure. A partner inside a European OEM’s own capacity plan carries capital exposure and a much longer commitment.

Six per cent domestic share and a fifth-place global ranking is not yet a position of strength. The Spanish, Slovak and Moroccan assets are the attempt to convert volume growth into something more durable than a price negotiation.
