On August 5, Avnet and Singapore-based robot firm Weston Robot announced a partnership and an autonomous inspection platform for industrial environments, built to push physical AI into real operations where devices perceive, analyse and respond on their own. The platform pairs edge AI, smart sensing and autonomous navigation, with its compute coming from an AMD Ryzen AI embedded processor delivering up to 50 TOPS for low-latency inference and fast decisions even when cloud connectivity is limited.
The inspection suite covers target detection, anomaly recognition, person and vehicle identification, personal-protective-equipment compliance checks and intrusion detection, with thermal and visual modes that flag hotspots, fluid leaks and equipment faults early. It fits manufacturing, energy, utilities, transport, logistics and critical infrastructure, enabling continuous monitoring of large, complex sites.
Built for GPS-denied sites
Autonomously, the robot uses 3D LiDAR SLAM to build high-precision digital maps and navigate, avoid obstacles and optimise routes in harsh industrial settings where GPS is weak or absent, from factories and warehouses to ports and tunnels. Avnet says it will lean on its technology-partner ecosystem, engineering strength and compute-hardware platform to lower the complexity of taking robot solutions from research to production.
Both sides frame the deal as proof of the convergence of robotics, edge computing and AI, turning physical AI from a concept into deployed capability for safer, smarter and more efficient industrial operations. For European buyers, the notable point is the channel: a global distributor with existing reach into Western factories is now packaging and selling this class of robot, which shortens the distance between a Chinese-Singaporean build and a plant in Germany or France.
